A person of interest has been arrested in connection with the alleged murder of a soldier on an Army post, officials reported Thursday. Sarah Roque, a 23-year-old sergeant, was found dead in a garbage on Tuesday at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri.
Roque, from Ligonier, Indiana, was reported missing after failing to report for duty on Monday. On Thursday afternoon, base officials announced that a person of interest had been detained. “The incident is still being investigated by the Department of Army Criminal Investigation Division,” officials stated in the statement. Major General Christopher Beck stated during a press conference earlier in the day on Thursday that Roque’s death was being examined as a homicide.
“As a commander and a leader, this is a tragedy,” Beck admitted. “This is something that we never want to happen, we never want for the family to have to endure, or for the unit to have to endure.” The identity of the person of interest has not been revealed, and officials have supplied limited information concerning Roque’s death.
Officials stated that there is no threat to the neighbourhood. Roque worked as a mine dog handler, according to officials. Since enlisting in 2020, she has received the Army Commendation Medal, National Defence Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and Army Service Ribbon.
