Elroy Clarke Obituary, Florida: Charlotte County man died in Punta Gorda deputy-involved shooting identified

The Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office acknowledged that its deputies shot and killed a man in his driveway soon after noon on Wednesday. Sheriff Bill Prummel stated that the man initially called 911 to remove someone from his home, but as deputies served him an outstanding warrant, he charged at them.

Deputies stated that they attended to a disturbance involving Elroy Clarke and Troy Johnson. Authorities declared the disturbance to be a civil matter. Deputies learned Clarke had an outstanding warrant for his arrest, but he refused to be apprehended. Authorities stated they tried several less-lethal methods to apprehend Clarke.

“They tried to use a Taser several times, [but] it had no effect,” Prummel recalled. “They deployed pepper spray, which had no impact. They used a baton, and three deputies got hands-on with him at one point while he was lying on the ground, and he tossed them off like ragdolls.” Prummell stated that two deputies discharged their weapons at the site. The Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office stated that they want to release the bodycam video after reviewing it.

Johnson is in arrest as of Wednesday night. The two deputies who fired their firearms are now on administrative leave.
