Idris Shehu of Hicksville Obituary, Death: Police ID Motorcyclist Killed In Islandia Crash; Driver Arrested Alan Mercado: PD
According to Suffolk police, Alan Mercado, 67, was driving a 2010 Honda on the westbound Long Island Expressway, near exit 57, at around 1:12 a.m. when the accident occurred.
Police reports indicate that Mercado attempted to switch from the center to the right lane when his vehicle was struck from behind by a 2017 Yamaha motorcycle.
The motorcyclist, identified as Idris Shehu, 20, of Hicksville, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders.
A passenger in the Honda was transported to a nearby hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening, while Mercado was unharmed.
Following the incident, Mercado was arrested and charged with driving while ability impaired by drugs (DWAI). He is being held overnight and is scheduled to be arraigned in First District Court in Central Islip on Tuesday.
