A University of Chicago graduate has passed away at a young age. Madeline de Figueiredo was the loving of Elijah Norman Alperin who died in November 2021 while travelling overseas.
Madeline de Figueiredo was killed in a hiking accident barely three years after losing her husband in an accident. The couple were graduates of the University of Chicago. Alperin was a native of San Francisco, California while his wife Madeline de Figueiredo was from Chapel Hills, North Carolina.

On November 1, 2021, Elijah Norman Alperin, AB’19, of New York City, passed away due to an accident while travelling abroad. He was twenty-five years old. Alperin was born and raised in San Francisco, where he attended Japanese bicultural elementary and secondary school, which sparked his interest in languages and cultures. He resided in six countries and visited 36 during his lifetime.
Alperin pursued a degree in history, economics, and languages at the University of Chicago. Additionally, he participated in amateur soccer and volunteered in the Syrian refugee community of Chicago. After graduating, he served as a case coordinator at the Arab American Family Support Centre in New York City, received a Fulbright award to investigate the integration of refugees in Turkey, and worked at the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Bulgaria.
